An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
