Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these groups, posts display dark colored packages with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
